Dog Barking Problems – What to do?

Dogs barking can be attributed to a number of different reasons. Dogs may bark out of boredom, dominance or attention. You can bark at your dog to convey a particular message or just to express how you feel. A dog will bark when they feel danger is imminent or if it perceives danger. As a way to physically attack a threat, most dogs will also warn off any potential threats. You can see this when dogs are pitted against one another, whether it is by force or circumstance.

Beyond a certain threshold, dog barking may become an issue for dog owners, or even their neighbors. Barking can be reduced in different ways depending on the type of barking. Dogs can be controlled in a number of ways. A good way to control your dog’s barking is by having a very strict relationship. Dogs are more likely to respect their owner if they know that you’re the one in charge, not them. You can control your dog more easily if you are able to establish this by using “nos” or other signs of dominance.

There are collars which can stop excessive dog barking. The collar emits a small amount of electrostatic shock every time your dog barks.

Debarking is a controversial method of stopping barking by surgical means. Debarking involves modifying a dog’s voicebox to produce a much lower noise. It’s usually the last resort of pet owners that would otherwise euthanize or abandon their dog. But most surgical veterinarians do NOT consider it cruel.
