How to Get Rid of Common Carpet Stains on the North Shore

People who live on the North Shore are busy, have active weekends, and have a lot of foot traffic, all of which might leave stains on your carpets. Accidents happen, like when your soccer boots get dirty or you spill red wine over your supper. What’s the good news? If you know what to do, you can easily and quickly clean out most carpet stains. Here are the most common problems and how to fix them. Helpful resources!

Red Wine
Time is really important. Wipe up the spill with a clean, dry towel. Don’t rub it, or the stain might spread. Combine two cups of warm water with one tablespoon each of white vinegar and dishwashing liquid. Use a cloth to gently dab the stain with this mix. For stains that have been there for a while, sprinkle salt on the area to pull out any wine that is still there before using the solution.

Coffee
Do you spill things when you’re in a hurry in the morning? First, soak up the area, then mix one part white vinegar with two parts water. Put the mix on the stain and blot it until it goes away. Light stains can also be removed with club soda, and it is safe for most types of carpet.

Dirt and Mud
Let the mud dry all the way. Use a vacuum cleaner to get rid of any loose dirt. If a mark is still there, gently scrub it with warm soapy water and a gentle brush, then dry it off.

Ink
Ink may be hard to deal with, whether it’s from schoolwork or a pen that got away. Put rubbing alcohol on a white cloth and gently wipe the ink. Don’t pour it directly onto the carpet. Keep using a clean part of the cloth until the stain comes out, then rinse it with water and let it dry.

Accidents with Pets
Do it quickly. Soak up all you can, then use a mixture of equal parts water and vinegar. After blotting again, add some baking soda to the area. Let it sit for 15 minutes, then vacuum. An enzyme cleaner will get rid of smells that won’t go away.

Oil or Grease
Put cornstarch or baking soda on the spot and let it sit for 15 minutes. To get rid of the leftover stuff, vacuum it up and then wipe it with a solution of dish soap and water.

Chocolates
After the chocolate has hardened, use a butter knife to carefully scrape it off. Use warm water and dish soap to clean the area, blotting from the outside in to keep the mess from spreading.

If you know what to do, you can get rid of most stains before they become permanent. And for that very thorough clean? On the North Shore, your carpets will look their best if you have them cleaned by a pro every now and then.
